DEEP is a meditative Virtual Reality game
controlled by breathing

Entertainment & Wellbeing

Deep allows players to navigate through a serene and poetic underwater world. Movement is controlled by slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing which soothes and relieves anxiety in the player. Our adapted wellbeing experience is designed to be available to all.

In 2015, game designer, VR designer, lover of all things playful and very dear old friend, Owen Harris asked Andy to join the, at the time, very small team at Deep as head audio designer. Working together with Owen, there was also art director/game designer Niki Smit and Behavioral Scientist Dr. Joanneke Weerdmeester. Deep has Been shown at Tribeca Film Festival, Playful Arts Festival, Cinekid, Tedx, iDIG Music, and many more, as well as being nominated for various awards.

This was a dream incarnate, and has lead to many surprising and humbling situations. There was a very steep learning curve getting to grips with Unity and it’s vast interface, but once realised, the potential for a fully immerse world was soon dawning. Using a binural drones (when there are 2 sine wave drones hard panned right and left with 10Hz difference between the opposing frequencies) the aim was to create a relaxing, hypnogogic audio environment, that isn’t too invasive, but hits the emotional notes when it needs to. Throughout the nearly decade of Deep’s existence the sound track has grown in complexity, dept and functionality, yet maintaining that core sense of otherworldly hypnogogic simplicity.

Currently the team is working with the BRAVE Research Center at Department of Psychiatry at University of Wisconsin-Madison to expand Deep into new territory. We have been given the opportunity to create a much darker world wherein the participants can try out their breathing techniques in a much more sinister, stressful environment. This time around the audio is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in regards to emotional tone, but at the same time subtlety is a key factor. Below are some of audio experiments and compositions Andy created for Deep over the years.
